DescriptionJogging and Ironwomaning in the Adirondaks.
7.22.07
Dan Walker + Kate D'Epagnier
Kate has a race on sunday, and we've manage to bum some accomodations about 7 miles from Adirondak Loj. I convince Kate to drop me off at the Loj before she does her saturday race prep stuff. As a I'm filling up my sweet vintage camelback, the cap rips off from the bladder. not as waterproof as usual... Being quite resourceful, I buy a 20oz bottle or gatorade, which conveniently fits in my min pack, and as a bonus, is capable of containing fluids. Fortunately I also have iodine. So I head out and jog up to the Indians. Well first up wright peak. My map has some ski trails and foot trails. I get to the Wright peak ski trail, and am not discouraged by the "no foot traffic" and "no route to summit" signs. I figure that's for the chumps in winter. It's a bit mucky and steep, but not unbareable. The trail gets a bit smaller after gaining a bunch of elevation. probably just under the snow cover in winter, right? Well, I keep fighting through it, as it be comes less of a deer path and more of a ferret path. fortunately I pop out just below the summit on the backside. Then down the actual trail and over to Algonquin. holy wet slabs! over again through some bogs to Iroquois, then down to Lake Colden. Coming down took super-long, as the recent rain had turned the trail into a sliding board. yuk! Eventually I pick my way down. I'm not sure if I have enough time to get up Colden and back down before Kate starts freaking out. The uphill would be an easy jog like the rest of it, but another long slab descent could put me out past her bedtime. Being such a great guy, I ecide to just jog aroung the lake and head back through avalanche pass. The running geat a lot better after the pass, and I make good time back to the loj. Then an easy bike back to the HQ. Well, except my back wheel keeps falling off if I apply any real force to the pedals. so its mostly coasting and low-gear pedaling on the flats, running with the bike on the uphills. I get back just in time for the bbq. hooray!

next day we get up at early o'clock, and head over to the race course. well, since all of lake placid is the race course, we get pretty close to the start, and I drop Kate off. then its off to try and find parking. Kate does her race thing for about 12 hours, then back to base for some dinner in her parents' RV. lots of cheering and stuff in between, of course. one of the funnier moments was when the volunteer strippers (as in stripping off the wetsuits after the swim) dragged Kate about 4 feet across the ground trying to get her suit off. times: swim 2.4 mi 0:58, 112mi bike 6:46, 26.2mi run 4:00. Kate got 3rd in her age group. sweet!
