North Kinsman Sunday, January 13, 2008 Lonesome Lake/Fishin' Jimmy Trail Leaders: Ana Jaklenec and Yeuhi Abe. Students: Andrew Lewine, Shame Treadway, Stephanie Tomasic, Aaron Yahr, Berend-Jan (BJ) de Bruin, Diana Lusk, Zach LaBry, Matthew Pearson Trip Report: The plan for this trip was originally to hike the Hancocks, but we decided to reroute last minute because of wet conditions. Luckily, we caught everybody joining us from Boston before they past by the Dunkin' in Plymouth and, from there, we headed for Lafayette Place parking to start the day. We started up the Lonesome Lake trail around 9am with perfect spring-time weather. The lake was reasonably frozen over and we decided to risk a crossing. Ana lead the pack and we traveled single-file at a safe distance. Moving fast over about a mile of flats, we quickly reached the final steep section and started enjoying the beautiful views on this warm, wind-free day in paradise. We reached the summit about 10 minutes before our turn-around time, had a quick lunch, and started the descent. On the way back down we tried a little glissading, but the snow was still a little stiff. When we hit the lake we removed our crampons and went around it - just to be safe. We made it back to the parking at dusk (around 4:45) -- just in time for some quick self-arrest practice before darkness. Overall a very pleasant hike with memorable views of Franconia Ridge and the Presidentials. |
