(Saturday, Feb 19 2005): The plan was to post-hole up Osceola
in some freshly fallen/falling snow. It turned out (while driving up the Kanc)
that the forecasters were wrong (as usual) and the sun was out with no clouds in
sight. After brief consultation, we decided to change plans and hike up to
Bondcliff instead of Osceola - the major attraction being the "hiker-on-a-cliff"
photo opportunity. Some hikers were kept in the dark about the actual distance
involved and were not too happy when they realized that our 8 mile stroll up
osceola had just been transformed into a 20-mile post-holing trek up bondcliff!
The first 4.4 miles of amazing elevation gain (600 feet!!) went mighty fast, and
we were at the summit by late-afternoon - yeah, we were kinda lazy starting out
at 10:30 from the parking lot.
As expected, views were great and
everybody got to have their picture taken on the cliff. On the return trip,
three renegade hikers decided to run down the mountain instead of walking and
managed to put a good hour--hour-and-a-half between the two groups (the real
motivation was that two of the renegades had to get to the common man by 7, and
they made it by 7:15).
