The Spring 2005 Intervale Keyholder Trip was a great time, despite the rain. About half of us went up on Friday night, and the rest joined us on Saturday monring. We spent Saturday getting LOTS of badly needed work done around the cabin, and had an awesome "BBQ" dinner inside, courtesy of GSC. For Sunday we had grand plans of long hikes, but the constant rain in the morning ended up discouraging everyone, so we all headed back to Boston. Still, a good weekend. Travis' notes below give details of what was done, and Henry's photos show the new stairs, before and after. Thanks everyone! -Christiaan

The keyholder trip this weekend was extremely productive despite miserable weather. In fact, it might have been the most diversely productive keyholder trip I've run in the sense that many many small projects were completed. We had about 16 people show up, despite rain all day on Saturday and Sunday morning.

In no particular order:

Road maintenance -- branches and downed tree limbs were removed and cut into fire wood

Steps -- The long-planned steps were completed on the front of the deck. (see pics, courtesy of Henry Hall). The steps are 5 feet wide which will triple our cabin's egress/ingress bandwidth. They also point directly toward the outhouse which should shave valuable seconds off those middle-of-the-night calls of nature. Christiaan did an awesome job directing this project. Eventually, I'd like to add a hand rail such that they can be used more safely in the winter.

Coat hooks -- We rearranged the configuration of the entry area of the cabin, such that 2 additional racks of coat hooks were added. This should significantly ease the gear storage problem during winter school when everyone has bulky jackets and whatnot. This involved realigning the benches such that they are along the front wall of the cabin, and moving one of the cubbies to the side.

Rug -- the outer rings of the big rug was resewn with trusty dental floss.

A new log bench was contructed at the fire ring

Progress was made in adding trim around the main cabin door. Only 1 or 2 more KH trips, and we should have all the trim work completed.

Progress was also made on designing a cover for the hatch that goes into the loft. Hopefully we can make a cover for this, such that in the event of fire the cover can be placed over the hole, thereby allowing people easier access to the window for evacuation. It would also cut down
on the amount of smoke pouring into the loft.

Chair repair -- the chair marked 'broken, needs fixed 1998' was finally reglued.

Brush in front of the observation/tenting deck was removed to aid in the preservation of our view.

General cabin spring cleaning was performed.

Christiaan and I also looked into sheds on Saturday. Within the Conway area, we could not find any place that sells pre-fabbed 'some assembly required' sheds. A couple places sell all wood sheds that they build on site for you. The cheapest of these was $1200 for an 8'x6' shed. This seems high. Therefore, I think we will continue to look around here and see if we can find what we want at the price we like.

I also bought a new chainsaw, per discussion last week. It's a Homelite Ranger at $129 from Home Depot. However, our Poulan apparently is running fine again and that's all we used.

We had an awesome 'indoor BBQ'. Thanks GSC!

Finally, thanks to Chris Brooks, Christiaan Adams, Eric Dill, and Steve Block for the additional BOD representation.
