    Sunday morning hike
On Sunday morning, a group of us took a hike starting from the parking lot on Rt. 3 up to Mount Champlain, and then south over the ridge to Beehive. Chris Glazner picked the route arbitraily without looking at a topo map, and it turned out to be a great little hike.

The first part of the trail had a lot of well-maintained rock stairs, and worked its way up over an aggressive but even grade to the open summit with awesome views of the island and of the sea. From there, we made out way down the open ridge, enjoying views all the way. We made it to The Bowl, a large pond on the backside of Beehive and went for a nice swim....until Matt pointed out all of the leeches in the water. No one got leeched, but we had a good time looking at the little suckers.

After eating lunch and swimming, we headed up and over Beehive. Here's were the topo map would have helped: the trail down Beehive is straight down! It was a scramble the whole way, with many iron bars and railsto grab onto for support. Without those, it was a grade 5 climb! The views were awesome, and it was a lot of fun on that trail (although in the future, it'd be best to climb up there, not downclimb. There's an easier way down, apparently).

From there, we visited Sand Beach and Thunder Hole. We parked out ferry car in a parking lot at the end of Schooner Ferry Rd, which isn't on the Park Loop, so we could avoid paying the Park Road access fee. It took about 5 minutes to get from where we parked to Sand Beach--this is a good trick for he future!
