my parents at connery pond
connery pond...
leanto. now you see me..
now you don't
more self-timed fooling around
cute lanterns in the corner
self-timed artsy photo
first substantial snow on the trail. little did i know i'd be crawling around in lots more of it later
ice, ice baby!
you could see moss through the ice. pretty.
finally getting views, with about 1/2 a mile left
great trail
my shadow's having a good time, too
lunch with a view
connery pond in the distance.
lake placid in all its glory (right side: west side of lake)
shadow's raising the roof
shoe's pointing south
it's a bird..it's a plane...wait, it really is a plane!
the lame way to get up the mountain (or at least, up to whiteface's nublet peak)
sign near the summit that convinced me to take a bc ski trail down. thanks, sign.
getting above treeline..
i took ~5 pictures of this ski lift
still going..
ski trails down below, soon (..1.5 hrs later) to be my way down
up until this point in the hike, i thought these rocks were the summit.
and then i took a few more steps. wait...who put this tower here?
oh, apparently the state of new york did.
whiteface, mountain of many ways really, there are 5 ways to get down: 2 hikers' trails, ski trails, ski lifts, AND an auto road
vieu
requisite triumphant summit photo. my hair doesnt look too triumphant at this point, but whatever.
observatory? or medieval tower?
beautiful weather, blue skies, barely any wind, warm temps, do a little dance
summit visitor center? or medieval playhouse?
3:30 pm.
4:30 pm
snow!
and more snow! and then none.
ominous warning sign. says that uphill traffic is not allowed after this point. was downhill traffic ok?
what a view. the operator of this lift has all the luck. and is clearly off from work today.
ski patrol lodge.
to the left: ski lift
to the right: gorgeous views
ski trail map on the lodge. my path down is drawn (orange down to first lift, black for the rest)
you are here.
i felt like i was skiing..except i didn't have skis..and there was no snow
it is your responsibility. IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!
still quite a bit above nublet
and the sun's setting...
vieu
the terrain. mostly grass. :D
getting closer to nublet...
high-tech snow maker
and finally happy to have descended to nublet's height
another high-tech snowmaker, minified
hittin' the slopes
ghost lodge getting struck by lightning
...or maybe just the lodge that's halfway down the mountain. closed and deserted.
the end.
