Our group, consisting of Nick E, Olga W, Matthew H, and Leanna W headed up to the Liberty Springs Trail comfortably early on Saturday morning, lovely and calm (weather-wise), a hike that would have been a bit more relaxed had we not been schlepping the weight of a winter overnight. We did get to the Liberty Springs tentsite with several hours of daylight remaining, so we proceeded to set up the tents and pile up snow for a shelter in an unhurried fashion. Even better was the presence of the Liberty Spring itself - flowing uninhibitedly and saving us from the bothersome task of melting snow into water. We got the camp settled and set to the task of preparing dinner - a fabulous chili prepared by Eddie the previous evening and some stellar pan-fried sausages (complete with condiments!). When we went to dig out the immense pile of snow prepared before dinner and left to settle, we were disappointed to discover a giant rock in the portion we had assumed to be snowpack. Perhaps an avy probe next time? Fortuntaly, we were well prepared with sufficient tent shelters for all and we settled in early for the night (8pm!), planning a super early start at 4am. We had apparently learned our 'how to be snuggly warm on a winter overnight' lessons too well, as we all slept soundly through three (!!) independent alarms and didn't awake till 5:30 am or so. Breaking camp with haste, we packed what we would need for the short ascent to the top and managed to summit just before the dawn broke, witnessing a lovely red-orange haze fading into full daylight. We lingered for a bit, taking in the nice clear conditions at the summit, and then headed back to the camp. We brought forth a hearty breakfast of potato-onion hash, scrambled eggs (some eggs were a bit.. frozen-ish, but they worked out in the end), fried bacon and ham, and skillet fried buttermilk biscuits. Somehow, we managed to stand up after all that and then proceeded to have some serious fun sledding/glissading down to the cars. Thanks all for a super-enjoyable weekend!!
