Mt Washington via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Tr Aaron and Rachel Normally I would caution against starting a winter hike at 11am on one of the shortest days of the year. This time, however, laziness seems to have paid off. We managed to somehow get everything one could possibly want out of a nontechnical hike from gorgeous aesthetics to benign trail conditions. This includes: -the usual winter wonderland scenery in the valley along the ravine -a comfortable, snowy trail cover. largely packed, occasionally powdery, snowshoes not needed. no postholing! -undercast skies! the cloud deck topped out at about 5200' -a breathtaking sunset. astounding pastels set across the sea of clouds -easy weather. relatively balmy with no wind. -full moon. though occluded once we rejoined the clouds, we still enjoyed it on the ridge briefly -glissading on the descent. the Ammo was in great shape. I should just hang up the poles for the season now. -AY |
