Pat Allen 5.30.11 43 miles ~1500 ft climbing We originally planned to bike to cadillac to see the first sunrise on the eastern coast, but a little wikipedia research revealed that actually Mars Hill up on the ME-NB border sees the first sunrise in the lower 48 this time of year (~march to september). Phew, that meant we didn't have to wake up at 3am to start biking. We left camp at the reasonable hour of 6:30am and got to the summit an hour and a half later, just late enough for it to stop raining and for some good undercast skies. We discovered that, in fact, the true summit is not the touristy place with the fancy picture signs and handicap ramp, but is actually in the wooded area behind the visitors center. There you'll find three official USGS summit markers from the 1850s. We made it back to the MITOC camp at Bass Harbor by 10:45 am, leaving enough time for some hiking during the day. Eric |
