July 3rd-7th, 2011 After biking touring in Belgium (2009) and Ireland (2010), we decided that this year we would continue the trend of increasing topographical roughness by biking through Switzerland. Our route roughly followed Swiss Federal Bike Route #4. We started in the town of Rorschach on Lake Constance, then rode through to Hemberg, Linthal, Beckenried, Soerenberg, and finally Thun. We totaled 320 km and 5500 m of climbing (200 miles and 18000 feet of climbing) over the course of 5 days. The highlight of the trip was the climb over the Klausenpass at 1954 m, higher than the summit of Mt. Washington! This was followed by an equally big descent down the other side of the pass to Lake Luzern, where we took a marvelous boat ride across the lake to our destination in Beckenried. |
