Eric Gilbertson, Elliott Fray, Mike Collins The higher summits forecast was "in and out of the clouds under cloudy skis with chance of rain," but we optimistically headed up to huntington ravine anyways to try to climb henderson ridge, a 4-pitch 5.4 route up Mount Washington. As we scrambled up the huntington ravine trail we noticed very cold air coming out from under some boulders. I climbed under to investigate, and found snow and ice! We snuck some snow out in a nalgene, then bushwacked to the base of henderson. I started up the first pitch at 1pm, and noticed the rock was pretty slippery. The clouds were rolling in and out of the ravine and every once in a while it would start raining. After a rope-length of climbing I decided the route was a bit too sketchy today for my liking, so we all rapped off after the first pitch and bushwacked back to the trail. There was still plenty of daylight, though, so we scrambled up the huntington ravine trail to the alpine garden, and then the summit. The clouds actually cleared by 5pm when we reached the top, and we had great views. We descended the tuckerman ravine trail and reached pinkham by 8pm to rendezvous with a few other MITOC Mt Washington hikers. |
