With lots of enthusiasm about finding ice by the end of July in the caves at King Ravine we started early Saturday morning at the cabin. The weather looked surprisingly quite promising and better than expected. With a bear container, Matthew brought to collect the ice, we started at 9AM from the parking lot. The trails didn’t only have fun names like “subway”, but were fun to hike on. We squeezed through some cavernous parts and finally reached the caves. It’s been pretty impressive to feel the sudden temperature shifts at some points close to the caves. Matthew really managed to find the ice and took some for cooling the beer in Camelot in the evening.

On the way to the summit of Mt. Adams the weather got worse and some thunderstorms with lightning went straight in our direction. At that point we turned around to be safe. I guess the fact of finding ice in the middle of the summer compensated it for everyone that we didn’t make it to the top.

The german car “Renate” (not an actual german car, but full of germans) went on the way back to Rumney for some swimming in the river. When we arrived in Camelot a delicious stew was already (somehow magically it seemed) prepared, which was the perfect after-hike food for that day!
