It was as if the Acadia Nationalpark wanted to welcome us by showing up with nice and sunny weather on Saturday. Since some people arrived at the campground after 3 AM the previous night, we woke up pretty late and certain hammock-user may have totally slept in …. ;). However, we finally all sticked our noses out of the tents and were looking forward to hikewise explore this beautiful place. Together with San and Philipp (the Austrian dreamteam who wanted to go climbing) 2 hiking cars started at noon at the campground towards Otter Cliff. While driving we all got amazed by the pretty landscape and our legs gave us a clear signal: they wanted to hike! On Otter Cliff we hiked a little while along the cliff on the ocean and actually wanted to hit the trailhead to Gorham Mountain. At a certain point we met other hikers coming towards us and looking for the trailhead as well. Hmmm….?! John quickly took the chance for some bushwhacking that brought us on the trail and some hiker into confusion about how this trip might end up. We hiked on Gorham Mountain Trail and got some awesome views to Sand beach, the climbing cliffs and saw how close the forests are to the ocean (I guess this picture of forests right nearby the ocean, I’ll always keep in mind, when I think of Acadia). We made it up The Behive and it was really hard to keep going since you always wanted to look back and enjoy the landscape. Ayda got a serious taking-pictures-addiction and I guess she got some really great pictures with her super camera. On The Behive we decided to split the group and Ian, Jordan, John, Maia and me went further to check out The Bowl while the others went to Sand beach. That lake (the bowl) was pretty cool, because it was a lot bigger than expected so we could go swimming. And later from the top of Champlain Mountain we saw the bowl surrounded by mountains and those itself were surrounded by the ocean! Going down turned out to be an adventure. We took the Precipice trail that did have some climbing parts, but provided some kind of metal staples to hold and climb on. Maia assumed: “that’s this kind of stuff you do and you’re not telling your mom about” – means, it was cool. We made it back before sunrise and went to Sand beach. On the way to the cars, we saw a huge fullmoon rising over the ocean. It’s been pretty peaceful and silent, since no one was there anymore. For me that’s been a perfect ending of a really good hiking day! -Nadine |
