Personally I’m always getting up quite early when I sleep outside. In Acadia I figured out the outdoor sleeping-in secret: sleeping in a hammock. I guess I don’t have to mention that John is the campion in this discipline ;). After a coffee at the campground, he soon started talking about fighting bears, riding moose and going for an underwater bicycle ride and I knew: now John’s awake. We wanted to bike but the weather didn’t look appealing. The sky was cloudy and we were pretty sure, it would be raining for a long time that day (maybe underwater cycling wasn’t too fictional?!). So we decided to go north on 102 and eventually bike to the eastern part of the island at some gravel roads and hike a little around. When the rain got worse we spontaneously decided to make the being soaked experience more intense and jumped into Echo lake. The water seemed to be warmer than the outside temperature and so we swam quite a while until some cliffs. The perfect spot for a session of (more or) less artistic jumping and diving competitions. Afterwards we got quite surprised when we realized we’ve had been in the water for 1,5hrs! We went on biking until Route 198 and before getting on the gravel road we followed the call of clam chowder – the perfect motivation for that weather. The culinary experience got even better. After John happily assured to the very motivated waitress that the food “is sooo good!”, she read his hungry mind and even brought another bucket of warm breakfast rolls for free (which were finished in subseconds!). That was followed by the ultimate lunch highlight: blueberry and apple pie with ice-cream! Pretty happy we went on the road again, where the sun was showing up. We biked until the trailhead of Bald Peak and also climbed Parkman Mountain. It was as if we had to earn the sun that day. After swimming, biking and hiking finally we got a great view from the top of both mountains. There were lots of tiny clouds hanging around which got illuminated from behind and the whole scene was enclosed by the surrounded ocean and nearby mountains. I guess it hadn’t been that pretty if it had just been an ordinary sunny day. We biked some fun loop where we could appreciate having mountain bikes and made it back to the campground with a short stop at Ikes Point for watching the sunset. Looking backwards I’m quite surprised of how much we had seen although starting quite late in the day. Happy but also really tired I fell into the hammock and immediately asleep. -Nadine |
