We followed the call of Canada before sunrise on Saturday morning. With 3 bikes, 1,5 Germans and a positive attitude towards bushwacking on board, we headed to Maine – Boundary Peak in Maine and Lac Megantic (Quebec) wanted to be discovered.

After almost 6hrs of driving we entered moose territory. We parked the car on the gravel road where a locked gate was blocking the road and got the bikes ready (that was at about noon). We biked 3 or 4 miles until the bushes got too dense for mountainbiking and left the bikes hidden closeby the trail (this place didn’t seem like a popular hiking destination). That was the time for bushwacking! For some reason I have this pretty bad bushwacking skill of always finding the way into the more dense parts of the forests and suddenly being trapped in trees (that means, never follow me!).

We reached the top of Boundary Peak and with it the US-Canada border at 4:30 PM and explored the hunting territory of Jacques-Ives and Pierre along the logging road. As for food we got quite experimental. We didn’t have a stove and found out that couscous can be prepared without boiling water.

On the way back Matthew found the ultimate trip trophy, an amazingly huge, heavy and smelly ;) moose antler. We shortly thought of inventing some fun and adventuresome story we could tell about how we got this antler that would include fighting/hunting/riding moose ;). However the antler had to be brought to Boston and will hopefully make it’s way someday to Camelot as adequate cabin decoration.

Afterwards we went for swimming to Lac Megantic for a real Quebec experience. There is a nice beach for swimming, that was quite crowded with lots of people who didn’t swim. On the way back into the US, the border man made us opening the trunk, looked confused by catching a glimpse of the antler, but immediately tried to keep his uninterested straight poker face. I sometimes want to talk to those people in an unforced atmosphere to just listen to what kind of funny and crazy stories they have experienced!

With a pizza stop we made it back to Boston on Sunday.
