Mountain Biking Trip

Intro Circus 2004
Date: September 11, 2004
Location: Waterville Valley
Participants: Brian Demsky, Eric Gilbertson, Matthew
Gilbertson, Thomas Kollar, Tedi Sutton, Ben ?

We went to the Waterville Valley ski resort. There was no one there. It turns out that Waterville's mountain biking is actually at the nearby Snow's mountain. We arrived at Snow's mountain, and it turned out that bike rentals actually occur in town. So we went in town so that Ben could rent a bike, and then finally started to bike.

We decided to forgo the lift passes, and instead bike up the mountain. The trailed turned out to be quite muddy with some rather deep puddles. Eric and Matthew had lots of mountain biking experience, so they took Ben and formed a seperate group.

We stopped for lunch at the top, and Tedi noticed some problems with her front wheel. It turned out that she had recently had the bike tuned and the front wheel bearing repacked. The bike shop didn't manage to correctly reassemble the bearing. So she was stuck at the top. Luckily, the nice lift operator let her ride the lift down to the bottom.

The local bike shop was unable to help with the front wheel bearing so Tedi ran the rest of the day instead. Thomas had extensive biking experience, so decided to do a trail by himself in the afternoon. We decided to meet him at Greeley Pond. The mountain biking trail we to ok started off as a fire road and quickly turned into something that
resembled a hiking trail covered with roots, drainage ditches, mud, and rocks. We ended up walking. In the end, time didn't allow us to actually make it. Thomas had some issue also - it turned out that his trail was also more of a hiking trail. We met the rest of the group and discovered that Matthew had broken the rear derailleur off of his
bike. He managed to convert the rear gear to single speed operation by shortening the chain.
