Description | Two Highest Mountains in the Catskills
Eric and Matthew Gilbertson November 27, 2013 Hunter Mountain (4,040ft) Slide Mountain (4,180ft) We were driving down south for Thanksgiving, and wanted to avoid driving anywhere near New York City, so most any route we would take would bring us near the Catskills. We’d never been there before, and read there were two four thousand foot mountains in the park, so that sealed the deal for our route. We arrived at the Hunter Mountain trailhead around 4:30pm and raced up to the 2.5 miles to the top just barely not needing headlamps. There were several fresh inches of snow on the ground, and the top was super cold and windy. We climbed up the fire tower, but unfortunately there was no view at night in a snowstorm. Back at the car we fired up the butt-warmers in the seats and drove another hour south to Slide Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Adirondacks. This trail was much less steep, and must have been an old logging road. The hike was also around 2.5 miles up, and we tagged the wooded summit after an hour, before quickly heading back to the car. We finally left the snowy Catskills around 9pm, and continued our long drive down to DC, arriving about 7 hours later. |
