Matthew and Eric Gilbertson 8 miles hiked 6 miles packrafted We parked the car at the Lincoln Woods trailhead and hiked about eight miles up the Pemi to the Thoreau Falls trail. With on-and-off rain, 45F air temp, 39F water temp, and snow along the banks, we put in just below the lowest major rapid on the North Fork of the East Branch of the Pemigewasswet. This rapid is a long chute and you can hear the roar of it from the trail. For the first mile, which is probably not runnable later in the summer, the rapids were pleasant, then picked up in intensity when we joined the main branch of the Pemi. Throughout the next five miles of paddling, the rapids, fueled by spring snowmelt, intensified. It started pouring, one of us (not Matthew) did some unintentional swimming a couple of times, one of us (not Eric) got stuck in some rapids, we got completely soaked, and the water didn't get any warmer. After paddling through some solid Class IV action, we decided to call it quits at Pine Island, and hiked back along the trail. A nice day of spring paddling along the Pemi, but next time we'd recommend bringing wetsuits. |
