Sunday: Passaconaway & Whiteface from Ferncroft

Tom:Wow, this trail is pretty rocky!

Mike:Welcome to New Hampshire.

Tom drove up an met me in the small village of Chocorua on Sunday morning and we drove off to the Ferncroft trailhead in Wonalancet. I had never started from that lot before, and it took us a while to find our trailhead in the tangled mess of paths that start there.

We ascended Mt. Wonalancet and Hibbard Mtn. on the way to Passaconaway. It was oppressively hot, humid, and the steep trail didn’t help things much. We were guzzling water but it didn’t seem to help. By the time we got up high there was so much haze that the views were really limited. Neverthesless, we decided to push onwards and hit Whiteface.

I had ‘attempted’ Whiteface with the Gilbertsons and a couple of other folks in January (see Winter School ’06 Downes Brook trip report), but we didn’t reach the summit thanks to a miserable combination of sleet and rain. This time Tom and I apparently hit the summit, but there wasn’t much there to recognize. A little further down the trail there were some great views off exposed ledges, so we officially declared that area the ‘summit.’

Heading down Blueberry Ledge Trail was pretty steep as we had been warned earlier in the day, and my knee started screaming for relief. Luckily the trail wasn’t that long, and we arrived back to the cars in short order. After returning to Boston I checked the weather and saw that the Tamworth Campground had recorded a high temperature of 103ºF for the day! Not ideal, but it was still a fun hike.
