We planned this hike in a flurry of emails on Thursday and in classic MITOC fashion everyone somehow managed to find a ride. I headed up on Friday night for some Saturday fun in the Pemi Wilderness and Dan drove Olga, Jerzy, Parminder, and Eric up to Camelot later on Saturday night. The six of us joined Jessica, Luisa, and Vesna in Lincoln at 9am on Sunday after Dunkin’ Donuts and a quick right left-hand turn off of I93.

We were relieved to hit the Gorge Brook trail at 10am just ahead of a school bus full of camp kids. We were quickly outpaced, however, by a surprising number of Dartmouth cross-country runners who seemed to be in a much bigger hurry than us. Gorge Brook’s gentle grade brought us up to some good views of the Kinsmans, Franconia Ridge, and Washington far off to the East.

Up above treeline we followed the trail as it meandered through a grassy alpine ‘meadow’ and up to the 4,802’ summit. Stopping for lunch, we basked in the sun and marveled at Parminder’s gourmet selection from Whole Foods. We provided some “trail magic” in the form of fresh fruit to a very friendly thru-hiker who kindly snapped a group picture before we headed-down.

Travel down the carriage road was slow-going as we navigated amongst the “cobblestones” of yore. There were plenty of good views on the way down and we even managed to impress some other hikers with the internationality of the group. Reaching the cars around 4pm we headed into Lincoln for an ice cream and then drove on back to Boston. This was a nice hike with great views, and the weather could certainly not have been any better.
