Mt. Moosilauke from Kinsman Notch Date: Saturday, October 16, 2004 Location: Mt. Moosilauke (4802 ft peak in western side of Whites). Route: Beaver Brook Trail (Appalachian Trail) south from Kinsman Notch Distance/Elevation (each way): 4 miles, 3000 ft vertical Hikers: Michael Baym, Petrina Chan, Catalina Estrada, Camilo Lamus, Minwah Leung, Cristina Paz, Karen Sachs Erika Swanson, Jessica Vechakul Leaders: Erin Aylward, Brenden Epps Author: Brenden Epps Photographer: Petrina Chan Wow, what to say about our hike?! We had a blast! This was my first time as a trip leader for MITOC, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. We chose a very challenging rout up Mt. Moosilauke, on the Appalachian Trail straight up the side of a waterfall! The trail was beautiful. The Fall orange and yellow and red lined the trail; white blazes marked our way. The team did very well. Everyone was in good spirits, happy to be outside and breathing fresh air. We leisurely hiked up the side of the waterfall, ascending 2000 feet in just 2 miles, snapping pictures and flashing smiles. We took a snack break at the Beaver Brook Shelter, at the top of the waterfall. Erin and I explained the difference between the composting methods at this shelter's privy verses the privy at Camelot. It felt great to be back on the AT again, but it felt even better to talk about poo. The team made it to the summit without issue. The summit, above treeline, was quite cold, foggy, and somewhat windy. The team enjoyed lunch despite the inclement weather. What else? Then we pretty much hiked down. It was a fun trip! |
