Kayaking the Contoocook River

December 3, 2006
Barry Jaspan, Martin Jaspan, Chris Glazner

The whole point of me posting a trip report for this trip is this: I just went kayaking in December in the 30s, and I had a blast. This was a spur of the moment decision, brought on by nice weather, a comical attempt at sea kayaking the previous day in 40 mph winds, and very bored individuals.

We drove out the 'Took, getting to the put in around 11:30 (yeah, alpine start). Luckily, we found two other paddlers about to put in that wanted to run shuttle with us (chances of this happening at noon on Sunday in December: 1%). We suited up in drysuits, pogies and skullcaps for what was surely to be a mind numbingly cold ride.

Actually, it wasn't bad at all. We were mostly warm, the sky was blue, and we had a great time. The river was at 8.4, which is a nice healthy level. The features were nice...it was just all good.

It was Martin's first time on the 'Took, so he was initially apprehensive. After running a 5-6 ft. drop very cleanly, he was pumped and ready for anything ahead: namely, Freight Train, the class 4 rapid at the end of the river.

We scouted Freight Train, and then ran it right down the center line. Everyone had a nice, clean run. The two guys we were with even carried their boats and ran it a second time!

It was a great day, and we finished up with grabbing dinner at a pub in Henniker.
