Who says January isn't a fine month for whitewater kayaking? January 3, 2007 Crazy people: Greg Wallace, Ryan Kearney, Chris Glazner Franklin section of the Winnipesauke River Trip Report Last month, I incredulously filed a trip report for our December foray. After that, I told myself, "face it, Chris, the season is over. Put your kayaking gear in storage." Fortunately, Greg made me drag my stuff out of storage for today! The Winni was in great shape today, at 990cfs. It was a blue sky, not a cloud to be found. The overnight low was in the teens, but the temp rapidly climbed into the upper 30s or lower 40s. No wind and bright sun made it quite nice! With only one car, we parked at the take out and Ryan and I walked back to the put-in. It's a bit surreal to walk though a snow-covered forest trail....in neoprene booties and a drysuit! Today we just ran the river--no playing and splashing for us today! The river was at a great level, and very playful. You know, properly dressed, it really wasn't that bad at all. We looked a bit silly in skull caps (or Ryan in his oh-so-fashionable fleece balaclava under the helmet), but eh, it was a hoot. It was downright balmy after we ran Zippy's and hopped out of the kayaks at the nice takeout there. The warming tent for MVP's New Year paddle fest was still there, but today there was no need for that. The snow won't last too much longer! Now that we've done December and January though.....February is waiting for us! |
