Thanksgiving at Camelot or, Camelot gets a new stove November 25, 2004 As many know, the stove in the living room at Camelot was highly inefficient, and was really easy to overload, quickly turning the place into a sauna. Travis Simpkins, the Intervale cabin keyholder, mentioned that his father back in Ohio makes stoves, and possibly had one that he could sell us. There was only one problem: how would we get the stove from Ohio to a cabin in the woods of New Hampster? Travis determined the perfect opportunity would be over Thanksgiving. His parents graciously agreed to drive in from Ohio if we could haul the heavy stove through the woods. There was an added bonus to entice people to come: Travis' mom would cook a Thanksgiving meal for all that helped! Several people jumped at the opportunity to have a wonderful meal and help out the cabin. The first few arrived on Wednesday after classes, and more arrived early the morning of Turkey Day. Using a large dolly, ropes, and a lot of muscle, we hauled the stove to the cabin and hefted it inside. After the Tetris-like challenge of getting the firebrick lining inside the stove and a little stovepipe work, it was good to go. The initial burn was good--a nice, even temperature, and it is easy to damp down the fire if need be. Mrs. Simpkins made quite the spread for us. A few others chipped in with small sides here and there as well. The dinner was fanatastic! The place looked great, too--we had a table cloth with matching napkins, and even fresh flowers that Bilal brought to say thank you to Mrs. Simpkins. The meal was wonderful, and prepared us for our trips in the next few days. Thank you to all who helped, and especially the Simpkins! |
