Description | Last summer we skipped over the New Hampshire section of the Appalachian Trail, hoping to come back
in January for more of a challenge. When we got to Hanover on January 7th, prepared for subzero temperatures and feet of snow, we were instead met by 55 degree heat and bare wet ground. If not for some melting snowpiles in the shade, we could have mistaken it for a cool summer day. We hit the trail around 2pm and put on about 6 miles before dark. I bet the locals we passed near the trailhead thought we were kind of foolish carrying around our monster snowshoes and crampons, but then again they didn't know that we would be out for the next two weeks and certainly find some normal winter weather. In camp Matthew started a big fire for making warm nalgene bottles, and we went to sleep quite toasty that night with the nalgenes and sleeping bags rated for 50 degrees colder than the air temperature. |
