Celebrating the New Year, we went in search of snow in NH... which this year has been hard to find so far. Luckily the Crawford Path from Crawford Notch to Mt Pierce was mostly packed snow, with only a few icy spots. Getting a late start (around 11 am, if I remember correctly), we bare-booted nearly all the way to the top, putting on crampons for the last 1/4 mile. The last 100 yards, where the trees disappeared, the trail was an ice cube. We made it to the summit around 3pm, just in time for an awesome view up the presidential range to Mt Washington, glowing in the late afternoon light. We watched clouds move in within five minutes, and as we were leaving the summit, the peaks to the north disappeared into the clouds. As we headed down the trail, it started to snow... and then freezing rain. Made it down to the cars by 4:30 (I think), and headed to the Common Man in Lincoln for another great meal by the fire.

Our crew for this hike was Christiaan, Lei, Amir and Solomon. For the latter two, both recent transplats from the middle east, this was their first winter hike! It was also the first winter hike for our canine companion, Tala, who very bravely carried her own pack across snow and ice. Don't we all wish we had 4 wheel drive and crampons built in! She only suffered cold feet when we stopped for breaks, and looked oh-so cute curled up out of the snow!

Thanks for a great hike everyone, good work!
