Our group of 11 (that is, 10 plus 1) arrived at Moosilauke's Carriage Road trailhead around 10 on Saturday. After getting geared up, we skinned and hiked up this moderate route under bluebird skies and calm air. Thanks to the first significant snowstorm of the year, the fresh snow was up to eight inches deep by the time we reached our turn around point just below Moosilauke's South summit, 4500 feet.
For the afternoon descent, we were treated to a classic East coast backcountry run. This included plenty of fresh, soft turns, as well as ducking branches, dodging saplings and a log jump or two. After tagging only a handful of rocks, everyone skated out to the cars by 4:00, beat but satisfied.
