A little "sidecountry" skiing at Mittersill (and Cannon!) February 15th, 2007 Chris Glazner, Greg Wallace, Mike Whitson, Drew Friedman Trip Report Mother Nature gave us a wonderful Valentine's Day gift---snow! We've been waiting for this one for a couple years! We ditched school and got on the road for a 5:30am start. The roads were horrible--we saw about 25+ cars off the road, and I-93 was shut down for a strech due to a major accident. So, the going was slow.....but we got there around 9:30, eventually! Cannon got about 30", and we were all psyched to get out there. We immediately headed to Mitersill, the abandoned ski area on the other side of the mountain. After a little hiking, we descended down the trail to the area....it was phenomenal. Soft....no bottom.....wow. Just as we got there, a guy was about to claim first tracks down the Tuckerbrook Trail, one of the fine New England trails out there. We continued on into Mittersill. While we didn't have first tracks, we were some of the first people into the area we hit. It was amazing. So deep....so soft! For those of us who haven't gotten a chance to cut our teeth on powder, we quickly got schooled on the importance of weighting the back foot and keeping your tips up. There were some amazing classic telemark faceplants. "dude, you were skiing along all nice and pretty, ripping it up, next thing I knew you were flying through the air horizontal and then just buried your face in the snow. It was awesome." We even had a fair share of spruce traps. You're skiing along, happily, then Wham! You're up to your armpits. Heh. Lots of fun. So, we did it again. Oh, and hit skied a little on the lifts at Cannon, too. Wow. Just wow. |
