Trip Report

What could be the last big storm of the season hit Friday night. There was a flurry of organizing on the bc-ski list, with people looking for things to do all over, both on Saturday and Sunday.

A few of us decided to go to Cardigan on Satuday, St. Patrick's Day parties be damned. The going was slow, as the snow had changed over to rain and freezing rain. Car 1 arrived around 11:15, car 2 at noon. Yeuhi and I took off for the Alexandria Trail, while the others went up to do Duke's.

The two of us set a really quick pace up, passing several people. We reached the top of the Alexandria, and then continued up to the Fire Warden's cabin. There really wasn't enough snow to continue higher, so we descended from that point. Some sledders that stayed at the high cabin overnight beat us to first tracks :(

It was a fun ride down--narrow little trails, wind-affected stuff, etc. Once we were on the trail proper, the snow was a bit easier, but still it took us a little while to figure out how to properly ski it. It was an inversed pack, dense on top and lighter as you went down. To turn it in, you really had to stay centered and make slower, deliberate turns. No quick snappy stuff for us. It was a lot of fun to ski! At the bottom of the Alexandria, we skiined to the top of the Kimball, and had first tracks on that (it's not signed, so people often overlook it).

We made it back to the AMC hut, and were later joined by Martin, Greg, Aaron and Lisa, who had smiles on their faces from their trip as well.

I also through in some pictures fo the following day at Cannon. Yeah, it wasn't backcountry, but damn were the conditions nice! I skied until my legs were Jello!
