DescriptionOn Sunday morning, after a week of beautiful weather a group of us went sea kayaking in Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod. Unfortunately the weather Sunday morning was more like a very windy 40° with clouds and occasional rain. Regardless of the weather, we launched our boats from Red Brook Harbor, and started paddling south around Basset Island. After a short break on the southeast side of Basset Island, we took a short detour up the coast to an abandoned light house at the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal. If we thought it was windy in the somewhat protected harbor, the wind and whitecaps around the point of Wings Neck were much worse. When we stopped for lunch on the beach (in front of a “Summer” home which was larger than most people’s houses) everyone realized how much colder it is when you’re not paddling. After lunch we enjoyed the shelter of the shore, as we paddled towards the eastern side of Basset Island to head up the channel (Pocasset Harbor) back to Red Brook harbor. When we entered the channel, which not only channels water, but wind as well, we were faced with the full force of the wind. A grueling paddle against the wind, with a few quick stops holding onto empty mourning buoys, we rounded the northern point of the island and had a leisurely, sheltered paddle back to the cars. In all we paddled about 6.3 miles, and were on the water for most of the day. Of course as we were about to leave, and already had the boats tied to the cars, the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful day. It was a great trip, especially given the weather, and being a beginner trip, none of the beginners people had any problems. Thanks to Rick for organizing the trip, and bringing boats.
