Author: Eric We had planned on hitting the southern presidentials up to Monroe, but had to modify our plans when it rained all day. So we hiked up the webster cliff trail to Mitzpah hut, going over mount webster and jackson. There were a couple thru-hikers at the hut staying dry and we talked to them while we ate lunch. Before lunch we were still holding on to the hope that we could hike to the southern presidentials, but because it was so windy, cold, and wet (perfect hypothermia conditions) we decided to stay below treeline. For the return trip we descended the mount clinton trail to the dry river and looped back to our car. There was one spot where we had to ford the river because the suspension bridge was rotting away. Dave inadvertantly took a swim here, dropping a nalgene and hiking pole into the water. Luckily I saw them in time to jump in and catch them before they were lost in the current. We made it back to the car by 5pm for a total distance of about 13 miles. The trip was especially important to me and Matthew because it finished off a 4-mile gap in the appalachian trail that we had missed in our thru hike last year. |
