Maine Island Trail Work and paddling

September 29-20, 2007

Greg organized a work trip to maintain a camping site on Ram Island, near the town of Boothbay, Maine. This is a privately owned island that is part of the Maine Island Trail, and it had received a lot of damage in a windstorm earlier in the year. On a previous trip out there, Greg met the island keeper, Art, and set this work weekend up.

At one point, nine people were signed up, but by friday, we were down to four. The others had no clue what they missed! The island was beautiful, a SHORT paddle from the dock, and the work was fairly short and kinda fun. Art came out to the island with us to show us an old campsite that was covered in blow downs. We cleared it in a little over and hour--Art was impressed.

We took him back to the dock (I was in a canoe, carrying the heavier equipment. It turns out that it wasn't really needed, so I just got the opportunity to paddle hard to keep up with the sea kayaks!)
We paddled to Indiantown Island, had a nice little hike, then back to Ram's Island.

We gathered wood for a campfire, cooked dinner over it, then spent the night around the first in perfect fall weather. Couldn't really ask for more.

We cooked a hearty breakfast in the morning, and went for a short tour of the area islands. It's just SUCH a pretty place out there. It's really accessible, as well. I'm predicting that MITOC will be taking several kayak trips out in this area in the future!
