Description | Polly Anikeeva Woody Hoburg Higher Cathedral Sprire, Yosemite Valley, CA Regular Route 5.9 We did the approch twice - once on a cloudy day right before a rainstorm, then again the next day when we had better weather and felt it was safe to climb. 5 fun pitches, with some loose rock. Old school 5.9 feels hard - the guys who climbed it in mountaineering boots, with rope bowlined around their waist are my heros. Wow. We took one steep 5.9 'variation' that really kicked my butt. I placed some pro, then contemplated getting out over a roof. It must have been ugly, because I was certain I was going to pitch off several times during what I would call more thrashing than climbing. Oh yeah, I think I was whining at Polly the whole time to hurry up because I was worried about lightning. There was no lightning, but we did notice flurries on the summit -- in June -- in CA -- hmmm. Polly's comments: The weather was kinda unstable, and it was freeeeeeeezing. June? California? Snow? Climbing felt hard for 5.9. Go old-school climbers! The views from the top are awesome - El Cap in its best. Woody could drool over routes, and I just enjoyed the beauty of the valley. |
